ADAMSVILLE

Bottenfield Middle School
The ghost of a young man has occasionally appeared in the choir / band area of the school.


ALBERTVILLE

Albertville Public Library
The library was built over a house that was torn down in the early 1900's.  According to employees of the library, they have heard
the water running in the bathroom when no one is there.  Loud rapping on doors are often heard as well.

Private Residence
A house located off Highway 431, is said to be haunted by one of the first owners. The man died after his tractor overturned
while working in the field by his house. Soon afterward, the deceased man's wife sold the house after hearing unexplainable
banging noises. Several families have lived in this house over the years and they all tell tales of the loud banging noises that
always seem to happen in late afternoon. Presently, this house is back on the market. The price being slashed numerous
times.


ALPINE

Alpine Baptist Church
People working in the church have reported hearing footsteps in the hall and the voices of women & children, when no one else
is there.


BIRMINGHAM

Bass Cemetery
This cemetery is the final resting place for many Civil War soldiers.  Some people have claimed to see a quick glimpse of an
apparition before it quickly disappears.  There have been stories of cults performing ceremonies at night, so it is not advisable
to venture into this cemetery alone.

Linn Henley Building
The ghost of former Librarian "Fant Thornley", haunts the building since his passing in 1970.  Some staff members reported
smelling Chesterfield cigarettes, which was the brand he used to smoke.  Several people also reported seeing the apparition of
Fant Thornley.

The Alabama Theater
This theater was built in 1927, and has its share of paranormal activity.  The apparition of a woman wearing a red velvet dress
was seen by a witness, auditorium seats have flipped down by themselves, sounds of footsteps and doors slamming have
been heard.  It is speculated that the theater is haunted by a former musician who played the organ for movies and shows.

Sloss Furnace - **INVESTIGATING SOON**
There have been more than 100 reports of suspected paranormal activity at Sloss Furnaces recorded in Birmingham Police
records.  From minor incidents such as steam whistles apparently blowing by themselves, to major sightings and tom some
reports of physical assault.

Over the course of its history, thousands of workers lost their lives to accidents, explosions, and in one case, a possible murder.


BRIDGEPORT

Russell Cave
Archaeologists discovered many tools, weapons, animal bones, three partial and three complete human skeletons from
prehistoric occupancy, dating back to more than 8,500 years.  One of the skeletons was a man who apparently died from a
spear wound to his back near the spine.  This cave is haunted with the spirits of prehistoric Native Americans.  An indiscernible
voice of a young woman was recorded, and another was of voices chanting in a musical-like harmony.


CARROLTON

Pickens County Courthouse
No one really knew who set the fire that burnt down the original Carrollton Courthouse on November 16, 1876. But everyone
blamed Henry Wells, rowdy man who lived outside of town.  The sheriff arrested him and held him in the attic of a building that
was to become the new courthouse.  One afternoon in February 1878, a lynch mob gathered in front of the new courthouse and
demanded that Wells be turned over to them. As a violent thunderstorm approached the town, Wells peered out at the crowds
through the garret window at the top of the building.  Just then, a lightening bolt struck the roof, killing Wells.  The flash of brilliant
light etched his defiant expression into the window pane, and no amount of scrubbing or solvents in the decades since has
been able to erase it.  And on those nights when thunderstorms roll through Pickens County, it is said the ghost of Henry Wells
stares out from the garret window.  The face of Henry Wells can still be seen in the lower right-hand pane in the garret window
of the Pickens County Courthouse.


GUNTERSVILLE

Whole Backstage Theater
This theater is haunted by two known ghosts.  One is of an older man that has been known to set stage mattresses on fire and
slam doors and the other  is of a little boy who can be heard laughing.


HOMEWOOD

Homewood Public Library
A staff member heard sounds of women talking and laughing.   Sounds of books falling from shelves and doors slamming are
often heard.   Between 1996 and 1998, the paranormal activity escalated when the library underwent extensive renovations.  
Almost immediately, crewman began experiencing strange activity such as items moving across the floor, electrical cords
dancing in the air by themselves.  One crewman refused to work there and quit.


HUNTSVILLE

Carter Mansion
Sally Carter died days before her 16th birthday from a brief illness, while visiting her sister at their Cedarhurst home,built in
1825.

In December 1982, Sally's grave, along with the graves of her sister, Mary Ewing, and Ewing's three children were excavated
when a townhome development began.  The graves were moved to an undisclosed location.

The first stories of Sally Carter's ghost were told as early as 1919.  One night, a 17-year-old boy from Dothan, AL slept on a cot
outside of Sally's former bedroom.  During the night, the boy had a dream that Sally asked him to prop up her tombstone, which
had fallen during the thunderstorm.  The next morning, he walked to her grave site and saw that the tombstone had indeed,
fallen.

A townhome community now sits on the site where Sally Carter died.   The Cedarhurst plantation is now a clubhouse, and
Sally's former upstairs bedroom has been preserved.

Crybaby Hollow
Ghost of a baby wails through the trees on cold nights and will sometimes scratch on the bottoms of cars that park there.
Mysterious breathing sounds sometimes heard as well.

Dead Children's Playground - INVESTIGATED
Legend has it that this playground was built for the children buried in Maple Hill Cemetery.  Stories have been told of ghostly
children seen swinging on the swing sets or swings that move on their own when there's no breeze.

Hell's Gates (Green Mountain)
There are a set a big black gates that stand about a mile from the bottom of the mountain that guard a mansion. It was once
believed that if you sat
in front of the gates for awhile, a car will come down the mountain and chase you until you get to the
bottom
.  The car would suddenly vanish.

Heritage Bible College - WHBC Frat House
Late at night you can hear the Ghost of former youth minister Anthony Stephens walking through the house flushing the toilet.
His now deceased brethren Robert Ekisbus and Adam Cooper follow him around making noises that almost sounds like the
word "cheese".

Huntsville High School
People have claimed to here foot steps and laughing of teenagers through the halls at night after late softball or basketball
practices.

Huntsville Depot - INVESTIGATED
Haunted by ghosts from Alabama's Civil War era.

Kent Robertson Park
A young boy died there one summer day. They named the park after him and made a memory stone. He still is heard in the park
at night and the hunt club-woods behind it.

Maple Hill Cemetery - **COMING SOON**
An elderly woman passed away and was laid to rest in the family burial house along with her antique rocking chair.  Some say
that sounds of her chair rocking can be heard from outside the burial house.

Old Dallas Mill Site
The Dallas Mill was built in 1891 and burned down in 1992. Haunted by a man died while cleaning the smoke stacks shortly
after the mill was built, and a homeless person who lived there after the mill burned down. People have reported seeing him
wandering around the ruins.

Space Camp
Space camp counselors tell the story there about a man who was working on the sleeping quarters at the facility. One day they
were using explosives to make large holes in the ground for the below ground quarters. The explosives went off early and he
was buried alive by dirt and rubble. Until this day in the halls and in some rooms there they can still here his cries for help
echoing through the halls and large moans late at night.


JASPER

Radio Station WZPQ
Haunted by a playful spirit named George.  Paranormal activity includes opening & closing a production studio door, flushing
the toilet, lifting the toilet lid (must be a male), and turning the lights on after they'd were turned off.  Some of these events
included staff members seeing an apparition, heard their name called from other areas, and one employee had her hair
stroked.

LIVINGSTON

University of West Alabama - Bibb Graves Hall (Natural Sciences and Mathematics Wing)
A former student experienced hearing the elevator door open at night and would find it empty.  Other activity experienced is
hearing footsteps coming down the hall, a ghoulish laugh.  Some of these experiences spooked some faculty members so
much, they refused to go into the building at night by themselves.

University of West Alabama - The Julia Tutwiler Learning Resource Center
Believed to be haunted by Lucille Foust who became a Professor of education there in 1931.  Paranormal activity includes the
sound of book pages flipping, books slammed shut, bathroom doors opening, cabinet doors closing, and chairs pushed out
from behind desks.  Some have seen shadows and felt a presence.


MADISON

Hale Fire Glass
A young boy drowned in a Ciphern behind the store.  The cat is often seen running upstairs and behaving as if someone is
playing with her.  One evening the owners could not find some items.  Suddenly, they heard the sound of something hitting the
floor.  To their amazement, an overturned box that was too far to have fallen off of anything, was lying in the middle of the floor.  
Upon picking up the box, they found the items they were searching for, and thanked the little boy.

Studio 106 Salon - INVESTIGATED
In one instance, a patron witnessed bottles flying off from the shelf.  One day a staff member walked into a room and locked the
door behind her.  When she opened the door, she was surprised to see a heavy wooden chair had been placed in front of the
door.  At first she thought it was a prank, but learned that the only other person there knew nothing about it.


MOUNDVILLE

Moundville Archaelogical Park - **INVESTIGATING SOON**
The sounds of drums and chanting could be heard at night.  Occasionally, one may catch a glimpse at an apparition.

Woodland Plantation
Woodland is an eighteen room former plantation house set on 200 acres.  Near the University of Alabama and the Mound State
Monument in Moundville, one can take a relaxing wlak, fish, or skeet hoot on the grounds. No one knows who the ghost who
stays there is, but they do know what it is responsible for.  The spirit turns lights on and off, and makes their taste in furnishings
known by moving pieces around, or taking pictures off the wall.



SELMA

Grace Hall
Grace Hall is a restored antebellum mansion, and is now a Bed and Breakfast.  Guests, especially children and young women
have seen a woman in a long white dress with a little black dog.  It seems the ghost is Miss Eliza, the lady of the house in the
late nineteenth century.  The mother of four girls, she seems fond of children.  An old gentleman has also been seen.  The
Dillons identify him as Mr. Satterfield, an attorney who lived there as a boarder for 25 years.  It is said that he and one of Miss
Eliza’s daughter’s fell in love, but did not marry because of their age difference.


Sturdivant Hall
Haunted by several unidentified ghosts.


TUSCALOOSA

Old Bryce Mental Institute (a/k/a "Old Bryce")
This institution was used for over 100 years and is now in decay.  In the 1960’s it was shut down and almost everything was left
behind in tact.  Today you call still find old patient records, chairs, mattresses, etc. Late at night, strange sounds can be heard
such as footsteps when no one is there, and banging on the walls and metal structures.
Note:  We are making every effort to research Alabama's legendary haunted places to provide more
detailed information.  APS will attempt to investigate some of these accessible areas (with appropriate
permission), to provide any physical evidence.
